Welcome to my site commemorating the the tragic events in Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
On August 6th, 1945, the city of Hiroshima was struck with the first of what would be two atomic bombs to devastate Japan. Three days later Nagasaki was hit with the second.
The damage inflicted by each individual blast was unprecedented and changed the nature of warfare, ushering in an era where the threat of nuclear weapons became a reality and destruction on a massive scale became more likely than ever before.
The goal of this site is to demonstrate the dangers of nuclear weaponry, primarily by allowing the voices of the victims who suffered through the first two blasts to be heard and also by presenting some imagery associated with the explosions.
The two bombs have played an important role in Japan’s evolution since World War II, marking a distinct change from their imperial history to strong advocates of peace. However, their identity as victims in somewhat problematic. While they were victims of the bombs, they were also the aggressors in the Pacific prior to and throughout the war, and though many Japanese separate these events in their minds, they are inextricably linked. In the very least, the outcome has led to a peaceful outlook.
Americans have also had to deal with their role in dropping the bomb. They generally maintain that the bomb was a necessary evil, but critical analysis of their actions is lacking, as was exemplified by the Smithsonian Institute debacle.
It is one thing to believe the use of the atomic bombs was justified in order to hasten the end of the war, but it is another to have lived through the effects of it. These are the voices of those who survived through these horrors and lived to tell about them. Their hope is that they will be the last to experience it.
